Submissions for Lumina Volume 23 will be open starting October 15, 2026 12p.m. EST until December 1, 2026 11:59 p.m. EST OR until submission caps are met.

Established in 2001, Lumina is a multi-genre literary journal and visual art publication, run by Sarah Lawrence College's MFA in Writing graduate students.

Mission Statement:

At Lumina, we aspire to open an accessible and inclusive space for all creatives to take part in the enjoyment of art, publication, and community. Our aim is to be an ever-evolving hub for creative expression, fueled by the desire to represent, support, and empower those who endeavor to share their work, whether for the first time or the hundredth

The Lumina team values experimental, forward-thinking, and genre-bending works that spotlight each creator's distinctive voice and experiences. We welcome writing and art that excites, radicalizes, and showcases a genuine appreciation for craft. Our editors invite submitters to have fun, explore new variations of themselves, delve into unknown realms, and emerge with intentional work that, regardless of publication outcomes, they are proud of.

NOTE: Gratuitous violence or depictions of violence that advance strategies of marginalization rather than challenge them will not be tolerated.

Submissions are open to everyone except currently enrolled MFA Writing students at Sarah Lawrence College.

  • All submissions must be in PDF format  (see specifications for visual art).

NOTE: Gratuitous violence or depictions of violence that advance strategies of marginalization rather than challenge them will not be tolerated.

Editors' note

The non-fiction editors, Karinya, Elaina, and Tiara, encourage you to push the boundaries of what non-fiction means to you, whether this is in content, style, language, or form. We are excited to see work that moves differently: not just from beginning to end, but in circles, repetitions, and digressions. Karinya, Elaina, and Tiara believe that non-fiction can take strange shapes; please break convention if you wish!

Editors’ Note

We champion pieces that surprise, inspirit, and propel the reader to different realms of feeling, place, and consciousness. We welcome poems that deliver us into the human experience through inventive forms, trans-lingual and trans-cultural text, fresh approaches to diction, and indulgences of sound. But, most of all, we value poetry that is authentic to you.

Additionally, in a world grappling with war, brutality, and identity-based injustice, we also strive to provide a platform for voices to reflect on the crises that impact them and those they care about. Therefore, we encourage writers to submit works that delve into the ways social unrest influences individual experience.

Submission Guidelines

  • You may submit 1 to 4 poems in a single PDF file (max. 6 pages).
  • Please do not include any identifying details (e.g.: name) in the submission file. Name your document after the first poem.
  • All work must be previously unpublished. This includes personal blogs, Substacks, and social media accounts.
  • We accept simultaneous submissions. Please let us know if your submission has been accepted elsewhere by adding a message and withdrawing on Submittable.

Additional Information:

  • LUMINA will not accept any pieces written by, with assistance from, or in collaboration with Generative AI.
  • LUMINA does not mandate content warnings, but welcomes them from those who believe their work may warrant them.

Editor's Note:

We are looking for prose in any genre which might be considered speculative, such as: fantasy, science fiction, horror, weird fiction, and magical realism. We are especially interested in stories which defy traditional genre boundaries, either by combining, subverting, or experimenting with speculative genres. Our selections will prioritize work which pushes the limits and expectations of storytelling, work which challenges dominant beliefs, and work which centers marginalized perspectives. Although any and all speculative elements are welcome, tired tropes in genre (as listed here by Clarkesworld Magazine), without some innovation or repurposing, are unlikely to appeal to us.

Submission Guidelines:

  • We prefer submissions to be 1,500 - 5,000 words. If you have a very strong flash we will consider it!
  • Please use Modern Manuscript Format, and submit the document as a PDF.
  • Please do not include any identifying details (e.g. name) in the submission file.
  • All work must be previously unpublished.
  • We accept simultaneous submissions. Please let us know if your submission has been accepted elsewhere by adding a message and withdrawing on Submittable.

Additional Information:

  • LUMINA will not accept any pieces written by, with assistance from, or in collaboration with Generative AI.
  • LUMINA does not mandate content warnings, but welcomes them for those who believe their work may warrant them.

Our editors are all eager for a variety of styles and themes:

  • Elizabeth reads widely across the speculative spectrum, from near-future dystopian to Gothic extravagance to Southern weird. What unites her taste is an appreciation for precise language, emotional authenticity, and specificity with character and setting.
  • Jones prefers unlikable characters and uncomfortable situations but does not like when an aspect of a story only serves as shock value. They like weird premises, dry humor, dark tones, and endings that leave threads untied.
  • Hannah is after the wet and esoteric underbelly of speculative fiction. Something to chew on, something tonally driven, gritty, and thematically sharp. Some authors she has in mind are Harlan Ellison, Octavia Butler, Kurt Vonnegut, and Caitlín R. Kiernan.

Editor's Note:

We are open to submissions across mediums and disciplines, including sequential work (i.e. diptychs and triptychs) and documentation of installation work, sculpture, and more.

Submission Guidelines:

  • You may submit up to three images that best represent your work that have a minimum resolution of 300 DPI.
  • Submissions must be in TIFF, PDF, or JPEG format.
  • Please include a short (~150 word) artist statement about your submission in the appropriate field on Submittable (not in your submission file).
  • Please do not include any identifying details (e.g.: name) in the submission file.
  • All work must be previously unpublished.
  • We accept simultaneous submissions. Please let us know if your submission has been accepted elsewhere by adding a message and withdrawing on Submittable.

Additional Information:

  • LUMINA will not accept any pieces created by, with assistance from, or in collaboration with Generative AI.
